Our Coffee is single origin, 100% Rainforest Alliance, Brazilian Arabica coffee.
Arabica beans typically contain about half the amount of caffeine that is found in Robusta beans, so our products have relatively low levels of caffeine. One 7g espresso ground shot of our beans, when brewed in an espresso machine to make a single shot (50 ml) liquid espresso, will result in the drink containing about 50 mg of caffeine. A typical medium sized Americano will be made with 2 shots, so will contain 100 mg of caffeine, for example.
According to advice issued by the Food Standards Agency on 14 October 2019, the daily recommended maximum amount of caffeine for pregnant women is 200mg, which is equivalent to two mugs/four cups of coffee. For all other adults, the maximum recommended by the FSA is 400mg, or 4 mugs/8 cups per day.
Our Coffee is 100% Rainforest Alliance (RFA) certified. This is the highest level of certification and means that the coffee we use has been grown adhering to standards that require environmental, social and economic sustainability. There are other coffee products available that we dismissed, which contain only 50% Rainforest Alliance beans, or even 30% RFA (which is the lowest permitted RFA content). Other coffees that make up the market are standard non-RFA beans. In using a 100% RFA product, our coffee compares extremely favourably to all of the alternatives, from an ethical point of view. This, coupled with the fact that our coffee is not a blend, ( lower quality) but single origin Arabica, makes it a product we are extremely proud of.
